Portfolio loans are held on the lender's own balance sheet rather than sold to the agencies — which means the underwriting can be argued, not merely submitted. For balance sheets that are strong but unconventional, this is usually where the yes lives.
A lender who keeps the loan reads the whole story. That single fact changes everything downstream.
